By the time Olbricht arrived, Mady's pains had subsided. She sat in the parlor, balancing a cup of hot tea on her stomach.

It was nearly 3:00 a.m.

The door burst open and a harried Olbricht flew in, a cigar protruding from his mouth. Edda was close behind. Through the open doorway Mady could hear the rumble of the Essex Super Six, its motor still running.

“Mady!”

The sight of his daughter, calm and holding a cup of tea, wasn't what he'd expected to find. It temporarily dumbfounded him, causing him to stop in his tracks and stare at her. Edda nearly ran into him. She was quicker to size up the situation.

“The labor pains have stopped,” Edda said.

Mady gave an embarrassed shrug. “I tried calling you again, but you'd already left.”

“Are you all right now, dear?” Edda asked.

“Where's Josef? Hasn't he come home yet?” Olbricht growled. His hands flexed like they wanted to tear into something.

“He's not here,” Mady said. “I'm sorry to bring you all the way over here in the middle of the night.”

Edda knelt by her side and stroked her forehead. “You did the right thing, dear,” she said.

“Get your things,” Olbricht ordered.

“It's all right, Father. The pains have stopped and—”

“I said get your things!” he snapped.

There was no arguing with him when he was in one of his moods.

Mady handed her mother the teacup so that she could push herself up. Edda handed it right back.

“You stay there,” she said. “I'll pack your things.”

While Edda went into the bedroom, Olbricht stormed out of the house, leaving the door open. Seconds later the motorcar's engine stopped running.

Never before had Mady heard her father curse. She did tonight.
